Plants produce 02 Gas by splitting water.

In lakes and ponds, the leaves of plants are often covered with bubbles. The bubbles are oxygen gas (O2) produced during photosynthesis. In the late 1800's, the basic equation for photosynthesis was determined. Most of the scientists had thought  that plants produce O2 by extracting it from CO2. After research and testing of the hypothesis, it shows that water is both a reactant and a product of reaction. Two experiments were made and the first plant was given carbon dioxide containing O gave off no labeled oxygen gas. In the second plant containing O did produce labeled O2. So it shows that the O2 produced during photosynthesis comes from water and not CO2. It takes two water (H2O) molecules to make each molecule of O2. Just to know where O2 comes from gives us a small hint of what else happens during photosynthesis. Photosynthesis produces 160 million metric tons of carbohydrate a year.
